Introduction
Biomedical science, which has proved
to play an important role in healthcare services and promote human health
improvement, is suggested to play a major role in tackling the problem (Soebandrio,
2012). Biomedical science hold an important role in Faculty of Medicine of
Brawijaya University. In the strategic planning for 2007-2012, our faculty declared
its mission to be an internationally standardized center for biomedical research
(Islam, 2007). Many students from Faculty of Medicine in Brawijaya University
had shown their capability for compete and win in international research
competition or conference. Nevertheless, the role and relationship between medical
student with expert researcher, professor and faculty stakeholder were yet to
be elucidated. Thus, further development for this potency is needed for
advancing biomedical science in Brawijaya University.
Prospect
and Challenge of Biomedical Science
The specific activities of the biomedical scientist can differ in
various parts of the world and vary with the level of education. Generally
speaking, biomedical scientists conduct research in a laboratory setting, using living organisms as models to conduct experiments or working directly with human tissue
specimens to perform experiments (Paul, 2006). Typically,
to be professional biomedicine researcher requires an understanding of medical
biochemistry, microbiology, clinical and medicinal chemistry, pharmacology,
cell and molecular biology, anatomy, physiology, pathology and/or cytology.
They must also be discreet, well-organized, meticulous and able to communicate
their findings to medics delivering treatment (Carden, 2012). Over the past
three decades, the biomedical science workforce has grown steadily. There
continues to be a strong demand for biomedical researchers throughout many countries
(Garrison et al., 2005).
Biomedical
science development becoming the key for international recognition for medicine
knowledge development. Recently, it becoming one of the main topics discussed
by the Indonesian scientist. In 28-29 Januari 2012 Indonesia were successfully
become host of an International Conference on Biomedical Science with Noble
Laureate in Medicine 2008 Prof Harald zur Hausen (Soebandrio, 2012). However,
the greatest challenge of biomedicine research were the lack of funding and
facility. Thus it will cause interference to develop from biomedicine research
into clinically benefitable product (Rachmawati, 2009)
Brawijaya’s Medical Faculty Strategic
planning for 2007-2012 described that our faculty aims to be an internationally
standardized center for biomedical research. For specific taskforce that responsible
for this mission, Center of Research and Development (UPP) and the research tree
of Brawijaya’s Medical Faculty consist of autoimmune disease, degenerative and
metabolic syndrome, infection, growth and development, herbal medicine, and
biotechnology has been established (Islam, 2007; Sujuti, 2012).
Ideas
and Solution
The number of paper review and research
done by the medical student of Brawijaya University is rapidly increasing as
the internet spread through all over the nation. Moreover, Funding from
Student’s Creativity Program from Directorate of Higher Education also increase
the research done by students (Al-Farabi, 2011). With good relationship between
Center of Research and Development in Medical Faculty with the students.
It will provide more benefit for advancing biomedical research. For example when
the professor and teacher need to finish a research tree, student can join,
collaborate or even develop the previous research that has been done there or
even submit it as research proposal for Directorate of Higher Education
funding. Therefore, the scope of research will be more focused to accelerate
applicable inventions for human beings.
Furthermore, it will be predicted
lot of student want to join the research tree team for their last project. With
better organizing system from Center of Research and Development, good
open recruitment will made a good atmosphere of research activity within our
faculty. Furthermore, passionate student with
high
achievement in biomedical research can be recruited as the research
assistant
and they will get scholarship for master in biomedicine.
The second one is for the
publication. Center of Research and Development could review and publish good
student’s research into accredited journal. Student can also learn how to write
better English paper there so our student can publish in International Journal
of Medical Student and International Journal of Student Research.
Conclusion
Good collaboration
between medical student with Center of Research and Development in Faculty of
Medicine of Brawijaya University will make a
better research tree for advancing in biomedical science.
